The coaching process

Questions your coach will discuss with you
(loosely followed)

As you customize a SYNC mini-story and/or template, a "round" of coaching may have one or more parts as needed, and these may be done in writing or in a virtual meeting. Coaching is available for individuals or teams.

Download the Discussion Starter, which has the same content about the five rounds of discussion as shown below, but in a table with a column for your answers. Answer the 1st Round questions and send it to SYNCcoach7@gmail.com.

1ST ROUND - You, your goals, and your situation

1. Who are you? May be an individual or a team. Mention your organization/church if relevant.

2. Among whom are you working, and what are you trying to do there? Mention the location, language/culture, religion(s), plus other relevant points such as “university students,” “rural people,” “women.” Have these people (your “audience”) already started following Jesus? (50-100 words; you can explain when we talk)

3. How do you think that adapting a SYNC mini-story or template would help you connect with these people?

4. Do they see you as a cultural insider or outsider? If you are an outsider, how are you different than they are? If you are an outsider, how long have you been getting to know them? (10-50 words)

5. If you have one or more partners as you customize the mini-story, describe who they are and how they are involved. (10-50 words)

6. Is your version of the mini-story going to be used in English? If your answer is no, we will later ask you to write your version in the other language, then do a quick, rough English translation only for the sake of our discussion.

7. Anything else you want to ask or mention? Do the next round questions look clear to you?

2ND ROUND – Choosing and customizing a mini-story  (What is a mini-story?)

  1. In about 100 words, write the prevailing "mini-story" that your hearers live by. See sample non-Christian mini-stories such as "post-modern" and "Islamic."

 2. Which mini-story fits your group best—Life, Roots, Freedom, Power, Mercy, Honor, Vision? Why? (20-200 words)

 3. What changes, if any, do you want to make to the mini-story you chose? Your changes will provide a framework for customizing the full “template” story later, if you decide to do that.

 4. Anything else you want to ask or mention? Do the next round questions look clear to you?

3RD ROUND – Customizing one of the “Who Are We?” story templates

  1. What is the final version of your customized mini-story?

  2. Copy the corresponding “template” story, and paste it here underneath the mini-story.

  3. Customize the template story. Use TRACK CHANGES and COMMENT as you did on the mini-story. Mention your past experience if that is influencing your changes.

  4. Anything else you want to ask or mention? Do the next round questions look clear to you?

4TH ROUND – Testing your story

  1. With whom did you test your story the first time (or the first few times)? The test should be with one or more of the people you customized it for.

  2. What worked well?

  3. What did not go so well?

  4. What might you improve next time?

  5. Anything else you want to ask or mention? Do the next round questions look clear to you?

5TH ROUND -- Praising God!

 1. Where did you sense that God was working in you and/or in the hearer(s) during this process?

 2. How did you benefit from the process yourself?

 3. Who else benefited, and how?

 4. Who have you told about your experience, being sure to give God the credit?

 5. What is your next step in using your version of the story more widely?

 6. Anything else you want to ask or mention? Do the next round questions look clear to you?
