NB: Several seasonal labels, icons, and colors are being changed by January 15th even though the biblical basis and the main ideas will be the same. I'll do a blog post when they are ready so you can register your impressions at that time.
Some spacing and formatting went wacky when I pushed items down to make room for this note. I didn't take time to clean it up. Scroll down to find the material below the gap.
Annual SYNC cycle
Party the year away!
This page provides an overview of the basics of the whole Annual SYNC Cycle. For holiday party options for only the current season (Life Season), see "Plan a holiday party."
What we SYNC with
The seasonal declarations and prayers in the memes are like seven different rhythms or beats we learn to dance to. The beat changes on average every 6-8 weeks, depending when holidays like Easter fall in various years.
The first six rhythms each SYNC us with one particular thing God has already done. The seventh one SYNCs us with something he is going to do. If we use all seven, we will be substantially SYNCed with Christ, even though no set of seven seasonal topics can take us to perfection in SYNCing.
The God-things we SYNC with
Creation, the source of every breath we take
The spiritual lineage of Abraham, the source of our group identity and purpose
Jesus' death on “Freedom Day” and his resurrection, the source of our freedom
Jesus taking his throne in heaven and sending his Spirit to empower us
God forgiving us and sending us to forgive others
Jesus rising above the disgrace of the cross, and sending us to do the same
King Jesus returning in glory, which we foreshadow and point to
How each season works
Click any icon below for details of how the season brings security and significance. Basically the seasonal declaration confronts and exposes some common cultural beliefs that make us insecure and insignificant.
Caution: Don't get lost in the details. It is easier to live in SYNC one season at a time than to try to absorb all the explanations at once.
This is a creation day,
and we are alive.
This is an Abraham day,
and we have roots.
This is a resurrection day,
and we are free.
This is a Pentecost day,
and we have power.
This is a Day of Atonement,
and we have mercy.
This is a day to carry our cross,
and we keep going.
This is a day of the Coming King,
and we see the dawn.
Option: say before each declaration above:
In SYNC with Jesus the Messiah, we declare that. . .
Make us a fountain of the water of Life.
Let it flow, let it flow, let it flow.
Make us fulfillments of your ancient plan.
Let us bless, let us bless, let us bless.
Make us a drum declaring freedom is here.
Let it beat, let it beat, let it beat.
Make us a signal of the Spirit’s power.
Let it work, let it work, let it work.
Make us a channel of your mercy, Lord.
We’ll forgive, we’ll forgive, we’ll forgive.
Give us endurance as we carry the cross.
See us through, prove us true just like you.
Light up our faces with a vision of you.
Let us shine, let us shine, let us shine.
Option: say before each prayer above:
Come, Messiah, live in us.
Come, Messiah, reign in us.
One of the best things about SYNC is that it creates some new opportunities for parties that are miniature versions of the festivals of traditional societies. Those were much more than just festivities. There was a reason and a story behind every one. They held communities together and reinforced the identity and value of each participant.
Modern societies have lost most of that meaning. Our parties are simply for fun. If there is a reason for a party, it is usually an individual current matter--a birthday, a wedding, a graduation, a retirement, etc. Nothing historical.
SYNC offers a way to get back to meaningful celebrations of everything that really matters in life. These celebrations also pass on the joy and the values of Life to the next generation in a festive atmosphere.
Tap into some of the old traditions around these great God-things and/or create some new traditions in your family or group. Remember that all these are warm-ups for that Big Party that is coming, the "Messianic Banquet" when people from all over the world sit down at the table with Abraham and King Jesus, the One who connects us to Abraham. (Lk. 13.29)
